Course Aims

This Ph.D. program offers both research and taught course programs. It is designed to enable candidates to achieve an advanced level of knowledge and competence in research. The objective of this program as follows:

  • To produce Ph.D. graduate to be oral health science researchers to an international level.
  • To produce Ph.D. graduate which must possess scientific analytical knowledge and ability that they can synthesize and integrate different knowledge to produce new scientific health that helps solve society’s health problems and develops the potential of the profession.

Field of Study

The program includes 3 major areas as follows:

  • Oral Sciences

Research in molecular microbiology relates to oral microbiology and pathology in dental caries, periodontal diseases, biofilm and oral candida infection. It includes basic and advanced research in bone and stem cells.

  • Clinical and Oral Public Health Research

Students will study both coursework and field work to gain knowledge and experience in Oral Epidemiology, health service, and behavioral research of oral health status and its determinants. We also provide clinical intervention studies on prevention and treatment of common oral health problems and diseases, including studies in oral health-related quality of life.

  • Dental Materials

This includes Biomaterials science, adhesion chemistry, mechanical properties of biomaterials and biocompatibilities.

  1.1 For Doctor of Philosophy Researcher

Entry Requirement :

  Must be graduate with a Master degree, M.Sc. in the field of biological science,  Physical science, Engineering, Health science or related fields.    Having experience in research and have research results that have been published not over the past 5 years or may be granted by the course program committee.

Entry Requirement :

  • For study plan Type 1.1

 Must be graduate with a M.Sc. in the field of biological science, Physical science, Nursing, Engineering, Health science or related fields.   Must have cumulative GPA of at least 3.25 or having experience in research and have research results that have been published with documentary evidence or may be granted by the course program committee.

  • For study plan Type 2.1

–  Must be graduate with a M.Sc. in the field of biological science, Physical science, Nursing, Engineering, Health science or related fields or may be granted by the course program committee.

Entry Requirement :

·    For study plan Type 1.2-  Must be graduate with a D.D.S. degree with good academic record and high cumulative GPA or graduate with a M.Sc. in the field of biological science, Physical science, Nursing, Engineering, Health science or related fields in equivalent degree with good academic record and high cumulative GPA. Or having experience in research and have research results that have been published with documentary evidence or may be granted by the course program committee.·    For study plan Type 2.2-  Must be graduate with a D.D.S. degree with good academic record and high cumulative GPA or graduate with a M.Sc. in the field of biological science, Physical science, Nursing, Engineering, Health science or related fields in equivalent degree with good academic record and high cumulative GPA or may be granted by the course program committee.

Entry Requirement For All Candidates :

  1. English language test requirements according to the conditions of the Graduate School, Prince of Songkla University as follows:
  2. a) PSU-TEP average score in 3 skills (listening, reading and writing) at least 50% or
  3. b) CU-TEP score of at least 50 or
  4. C) TOEFL (Paper Based) score of at least 450 or
  5. d) TOEFL (revised Paper-delivered Test) score of at least 34 or
  6. e) TOEFL (Institutional Testing Program) score of at least 470 or
  7. f) TOEFL (Computer Based) score of at least 133 or
  8. g) TOEFL (Internet Based) score of at least 45 or
  9. h) IELTS score of at least 4.5

*Test result valid within two years

2. Other Qualification according to the regulation of Postgraduate Educational Unit, Prince of Songkla University

Conditions to graduate

    1. For Master’s degree graduate1.1 For Doctor of Philosophy Researcher –  Must pass thesis proposal examination, thesis presentation and final oral examination. –  Thesis examination committee and thesis or a part of thesis must be published in academic journal which is in ISI database at least 2 articles by approving from expert committees in postgraduate education of Faculty of Dentistry. 1.2 For Normal Ph.D. Program Student 1.2.1 Type 1 – Thesis only (Type 1.1) –  Must pass thesis proposal examination, thesis presentation and final oral examination. –  Thesis examination committee and thesis or a part of thesis must be published in quality international journal in English language at least 2 articles by approving from expert committees in postgraduate education of Faculty of Dentistry. 1.2.2 Type 2Thesis and coursework (Type 2.1) –  Must successfully completed all required and electives Courses with cumulative GPA of at least 3.00/4.00 or equivalent-  Must pass thesis proposal examination, thesis presentation and final oral examination.-  Thesis examination committee and thesis or a part of thesis must be published in quality international journal in English language at least 1 article by approving from expert committees in postgraduate education of Faculty of Dentistry.
    1. For Bachelor’s degree graduate2.1 Type 1 – Thesis only (Type 1.2) –  Must pass thesis proposal examination, thesis presentation and final oral examination. –  Thesis examination committee and thesis or a part of thesis must be published in quality international journal in English language at least 2 articles by approving from expert committees in postgraduate education of Faculty of Dentistry. 2.2 Type 2Thesis and coursework (Type 2.2) –  Must successfully completed all required and electives Courses with cumulative GPA of at least 3.00/4.00 or equivalent-  Must pass thesis proposal examination, thesis presentation and final oral examination.-  Thesis examination committee and thesis or a part of thesis must be published in quality international journal in English language at least 1 article by approving from expert committees in postgraduate education of Faculty of Dentistry.
    1. For All graduate3.1 Must pass English language test according to the conditions of the Graduate School, Prince of Songkla University 3.2 Must successfully completed Qualifying Examination 3.3 Must Fulfill all regulations of program, Faculty and University.

Duration of Study

3 years (For candidates who have a Master degree)
4 years (For candidates who have a Bachelor degree)

* 1 academic year consists of 2 semester (16 weeks per semester)
